After an hour and a half, we reached Seal Island, home to the largest puffin colony in Maine. This island, part of the National Wildlife Refuge system, is 21 miles off the coast of Rockland and boasts a remarkable recovery story. Once on the brink of extinction due to hunting and human intrusion, puffins now thrive here, with the latest survey counting 672 active burrows, a significant increase from previous years.
